Come Closer

“Come near to God, and God will come near to you.” — James 4:8, (NCV)

During one of my ‘episodes,’ I told God, out of mild frustration, that I couldn’t really hear what He was trying to say to me and the words “come closer” very gently came to my spirit. At first, I questioned whether or not that was really God and not just one of my random thoughts. I expected Him to send a barrage of quotable, lyrical words to my conscience. Although this phrase was not as poetic as I had imagined, I knew it was God dealing with me in straight forward truth. As it reads in Hebrews 4:12, “God’s word is alive and working and is sharper than a double-edged sword. It cuts all the way into us, where the soul and the spirit are joined, to the center of our joints and bones. And it judges the thoughts and feelings in our hearts.”

At the time I heard the phrase, come closer, I knew I had not been praying or studying the Bible as consistently as I should have been. I also knew I would never become intimate with God without developing good habits in these areas. Prayer allows us to communicate with God, but God reveals Himself to us through Bible scriptures.

Single women must realize that building a relationship with God is a process; one with extremely high reward, but not without its bumps and bruises. Hard heads and bruised egos constantly need to be dealt with and brought under the control of the Holy Spirit.

However, it is important not to become discouraged in your walk with Christ when you make mistakes or when it seems that your life is falling apart. It takes determination and courage to plow ahead believing that moving forward with God has to be much better than all the mess and condemnation you left behind. I could not go back to the worldly pit I was in; it was much too terrible. So I began to trust that God was directing my path, because I was no longer using the road map I had created for my life.
