Overcoming Guilt

modern christian women of color overcoming guilt blog post

“If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done.” — 1 John 1:8-9, (NCV)

Guilt compromises and damages your relationship with God. How can you tell? You might stop going to church, reading the bible or praying consistently. Freedom from guilt and condemnation is absolutely necessary for living a victorious Christian life.

STEPS TO OVERCOMING GUILT AND CONDEMNATION:

  1. Understand condemnation, guilt, and blame in your life.

  2. What do you feel guilty about? Write down what you feel guilty about.

  3. Are you angry with God? Do you feel God allowed something bad to happen to you that should not have happened? Write that down.

  4. Confess or say out loud wrong things you have done, mistakes you have made, errors in judgment or ways you have failed.

  5. Ask God for forgiveness.

  6. Read scriptures about freedom from guilt.

  7. Claim freedom from sin: “In the name of Jesus, I am free from sin and death. I am blameless, clean and righteous before God through my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

  8. Confess or say aloud the situation that made you angry with God. Let it all out. Say exactly how you feel, but be respectful.

  9. Tell God you want to let go of the anger, but don’t know how. Tell God you want to be close to him again, but have felt hurt and guilty for not having more faith or for not being strong enough to just get over it and move on. Ask God for grace and mercy. Ask God for help in forgiving yourself, forgiving God and forgiving the people who have hurt you.

  10. Read scriptures out loud about how God sees us and feels about us.

  11. Read scriptures out loud about God’s love and mercy for us.

  12. Get still. Take three deep breaths. Write down any thoughts that come to your mind. This is called meditating in God’s word.

  13. Encourage and empower yourself by reading scriptures out loud about who we are in Christ.
